Englishmen in New York

Hier soir nous avons vu Mark qui était de passage à New York pour son boulot. Nous ne l'avions pas revu depuis notre mariage et les choses ont bien changé pour lui en un an : il vient de se marier avec Sarah à l'île Maurice (juste tous les deux), ils attendent un bébé (un garçon) pour cet été et ils vont bientôt déménager dans une maison plus près de Londres (ce qui évitera à Mark un trajet de 2h (!) pour aller au bureau à Londres depuis Southampton).

We saw Mark in New York yesterday (he was here on a business trip). We had not seen him since our wedding. Things have changed dramatically for him since last year. He got married with Sarah in Mauritius (just the two of them), they're expecting a baby (a little boy) for this summer and they're going to move to a new house closer to London (which means that instead of a 2 hour commute to go to work in London from Southampton (!), it will take him roughly 1 hour).

Damien et Nicki nous ont rejoint plus tard dans la soirée dans un bar dans le Lower East Side après la fin du concert de Woody Allen (Woody Allen joue chaque lundi soir dans un groupe de jazz quand il est à New York, c'est-à-dire quand il n'est pas à Londres en train de tourner un film avec Scarlett Johansson !). Soirée finalement très anglaise entre le flot de bière (la preuve en images) et la discussion très étrange (du moins pour moi) et très animée (spécialement entre Nicki et Mark) sur les mérites du chocolat Cadbury et des Creme Eggs (il y a beaucoup de choses que j'aime au sujet de l'Angleterre mais le chocolat anglais n'en fait pas partie !) : c'est dans des moments comme ceux-là que je réalise que, malgré tout, il existe toujours un fossé culturel (et culinaire) entre les Anglais et moi !

We were joined by Damien and Nicki later in the evening after their Woody Allen concert (Woody Allen plays in a jazz band every Monday evening when he's in New York... when he's not filming a movie with Scarlett Johansson in London for example !). We ended up in a bar on the Lower East Side, having what I would call a typically English evening : the beer kept flowing (as you can see in the pictures) and we had this very strange (at least for me) and animated (especially between Nicki and Mark) conversation about the merits of Cadbury chocolate and Creme Eggs (there are a lot of things I love about England but English chocolate is definitely not one of them !) : talk about a cultural (and culinary) gap between me and the English!
